Dindane Doesn’t Deserve Your Disdain

So, we first aired the sad story of aging target forward Dindane, who agreed to a loan to Portsmouth but soon got caught in a trap – his French club said that if he played more than X games, then Portsmouth had to pay four million pounds. Thus, Dindane got caught in a lose-lose situation – play well, then play games, then screw over Pompey. And what happened? He went on a scoring streak. And then what?

Well, Pompey decided to play Dindane in Premiership games and the FA Cup finals. The French club finally came around and realized that a goalscoring Dindane would fetch a handsome full transfer after the World Cup. Hooray! They only requested half of the bonus, which Pompey of course disputes.

The most important part is that the born again Dindane is playing well for Pompey, has garnered interest from Champions League bound Panathinaikos, and earned a World Cup provisional roster spot with the Ivory Coast.

Now, whether Dindane can earn playing time alongside the in-form Drogba and Kalou is another matter, but at least he is back to banging in goals, playing regular footy, and has an optimistic club situation. While Portsmouth has announced it will axe 5 regulars after the FA Cup due to administration and relegation, Dindane already set sails long before the disaster mushroomed into a supersized mushroom shaped disaster.

And thus you can be happy for him. You can also read about Portsmouth fan eccentricities in this really cool BBC piece – apparently Irish Pubs in Perth, Australia and cycling in France are very vogue among the Pompey faithful. Sweet.

2006 World Cup information

2006 World Cup information

Côte d'Ivoire qualified through a tough qualifying group which included African powerhouses Cameroon and Egypt, despite losing home and away to the former. On the last day of qualification, they confirmed their spot with a 3–1 win over Sudan, while Cameroon faltered and could only manage a 1–1 draw at home to Egypt.

Côte d'Ivoire lost their opening game 2–1 in the 2006 World Cup in Germany to an Argentine side. The goals for Argentina came from Hernán Crespo and Javier Saviola. Côte d'Ivoire's goal came from Chelsea striker Didier Drogba. They lost their second match to the Netherlands by the same scoreline and were thus eliminated from the tournament. The Netherlands' goals came from a Robin van Persie free-kick in the 23rd minute and a Ruud van Nistelrooy strike in the 27th minute. Bakari Koné scored in the 38th minute for the Africans to pull the score to 2–1. Côte d'Ivoire's final game was against Serbia and Montenegro. The Serbian team scored two quick goals and it appeared that the Côte d'Ivoire was destined for a three-loss World Cup campaign. However, the Africans came back, led by two goals from Aruna Dindane, and won the game 3–2 to finish in third place.
2010 World Cup Qualification

On 10 October 2009, Côte d'Ivoire secured a place at the 2010 World Cup after Didier Drogba struck within two minutes of coming on as a substitute to clinch a 1–1 draw with Malawi.

Ivory Coast – The Distasteful Tale of Dindane

All flowers grow from a pot of dirt. Despite the darkness of relegation at season’s end, the fairytale run to the FA Cup final has given Portsmouth’s fans a bit of solace. It also has rejuvenated the form and confidence of one Aruna Dindane. But all is not well…

Apparently, if Dundane plays in the FA Cup final, it will trigger a clause in his contract from Lens that will require Portsmouth to pay 4 million pounds. Pompey does not have that cash.

Avram Grant has stated his claim – if Lens want to sell the player this summer and the player is competing for a World Cup place, then games at Pompey can lead to that spot and a nice transfer. See the equation yourself.

Just for clarification, the French club would have allowed him to play in the FA Cup final. But they remained adamant that he cannot play any other games.

Portsmouth refused to accept this “one off deal.” They adamantly believed that the player would need Premiership games to be fit & match sharp for the tie against Chelsea.

In a sense, this situation reflects the sad state of Pompey affairs. They cannot afford success. On the other hand, these sort of payday-player-loans with hidden games-clauses reek of usury and, ultimately, its the player who suffers.

As is normally the case, both sides are being unreasonable, viewing the situation as black/white and either/or. Its sad to see a person, a professional no less, being treated as chattel. And we the viewers miss out.
